Breast Implants and Mammograms

For some women, reaching their aesthetic goals means undergoing breast augmentation. Breast enlargement is a much more socially acceptable today than it has ever been before and, because so many women from different walks of life are consulting with plastic surgeons, women with breast implants and health is an important topic.

Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer for women and getting an annual mammogram to help locate any tumors early is an extremely important medical exam. If you are interested in breast implants, you should know that breast implants do not increase the likelihood of getting breast cancer. Mammograms can also still be properly performed when you have breast implants, as long as the technician knows beforehand that you have implants. In fact, it is important that you tell the technician so that they can obtain different views to get an accurate screening.

Some women with breast implants may worry about the implant t rupturing while they are getting their mammogram. However, breast implant rupture during the first ten years of its life is highly unlikely. While you will eventually have to replace your breast implants, worrying about them rupturing during a mammogram should not be a concern. You may also be able to get an MRI in place of a mammogram. This is encouraged for women whose breast implants are placed subglandularly as the mammogram may not detect all areas it should.

The one fear of your breast implant rupturing may lead to delaying, or even avoiding, your mammogram. You need to weigh the risks when it comes to this aspect of your life. Your breast implant will have to be replaced around 15 years after you have it placed by your plastic surgeon. Avoiding mammograms at this time is not in your best interest.

Every plastic surgeon will put your health first. If you are concerned about getting mammograms with breast implants, they can put your mind at ease during your consultation.
